• Excellent incremental backup that makes exact copies

  Pros

  This is a frequently updated program, and so you can safely ignore previous complaints. The beauty of SyncBack Free is that the copy it makes of your docs folder (for example) to an external hard drive is an exact copy. So even if your computers completely crash, you can immediately access your docs by connecting the drive to any available computer. Incremental backup is fast because SyncBack only has to update the changes since the last backup. You can put your docs folder in a data partition on an internal hard drive. That way if your operating system partition crashes, usually your data partition survives. You can back up that docs folder to an external drive. If that drive is only turned on to do backups then it is very secure. Unless your house burns down. :(

  No cons except the requirement that something has to be entered into this cons form. Plus the Cnet video that overlaps this review form making it difficult to fill in.

  Backs up folders well and is fairly straight forward to set up.

  Cons

  After an initial backup: If you change a notepad file in the SOURCE, it will not allow a back-up to the DESTINATION. It will flag it as a 'COLLISION' and leave out the updated text file. I can not see a way around this glitch. Even 'MIRROR' causes the error. I have to go into the DESTINATION drive and physically delete the older file, then it will allow a complete back-up of SOURSE to DESTINATION.

  Summary

  Not really complaining. After all it IS Free! But would like to see the developer include a way for the user to override the 'COLLISION' condition and have the 'newer' file update or replace the 'old' one.

  Pros

  SyncBackFree is incredibly powerful, flexible, reliable, and easy to use. I've used it for years without a single problem. An early version had problems with daylight savings time but that was fixed many years ago, and even then the program had the flexibility to work around the problem. There are so many bad programs (especially the free ones) that one can easily get 'search weary'. End your search now. Use SyncBackFree!

  - V6.5.30 is a bit buggy Several checkbox options are not saved correctly. When copying a profile, the file selections of the 'copy from' profile are retained even though the folder path is changed and completely different. Sometimes erroneous error are displayed after a profile has run indication that it could not copy a file. However, the file it reports the error on is in a completely different folder! - Bizzar user interface decisions The developers have made some very strange user interface decisions. Examples below. There is no way to clear the status of a profile once if has been run. However, if the profile is part of a group, the status of ONLY the group can be cleared. When copying a profile, the file selections of the 'copy from' profile are retained even though the folder path is changed and completely different. There is a cleanup button to remove the erroneous files / folders from the list. But why include them in the first place? They don't belong! There is a checkbox to automatically clear these erroneous files / folders from the list. However, the placement of this checkbox forces you to see the erroneous data before you are able to clear it. In addition, the cleanup automatically checkbox is only saved sometimes. There is a button panel toolbar that allow quick access to popular items. Unfortunately, the developers have decided the buttons that are displayed and have provided no way for the user to change them. Hope you like 8pt font size. ALL data and labels through the entire application is fixed at 8pt. There is an option to change the font face but NOT size! This is just unacceptable! There are nagging prompts for everything. The good news is that there are checkbox options to silence them. Unfortunately, these checkbox settings are on a per profile basis and NOT global. So you get to set them for every profile! Each profile has an encryption option. Oddly, when you select this option in the left pane, a blank right pane is displayed with the message "Click here for encryption information". Why not just show the encryption information when the encryption tab is selected??? Very strange user interface in spots!

  Runs in the background nicely. Makes good file mirrors. Easy setup and preset profiles. Free.

  Its hard to stop all scheduled operations temporarily.

  This software is not only free, it is also easier to use, has more features, and runs more nicely than other paid file copy utilities.

  Pros

  Backs up a drive without stopping for each file a regular copy might ask you some question for, or stop altogether. Result is ZIP file - save some space.

  Cons

  Requires space on some disk partition for a work file as large as the eventual ZIP file, and then it copies the completed work file to the completed ZIP file. I ended up using 7Zip for backing up my largest partitions.

• Kept freezing my computer

  Pros

  There are no pros. Kept freezing when attempting to run.

  Cons

  Tried it twice and both times froze my laptop. Took up many system resources. Very slow and unreliable program.

  I would not recommend this backup software to anyone. It's better to just copy your files manually.

  Good reviews, but in using, I don't see the attraction.

  Cons

  Can't even do a simple folder transfer / backup from one internal HDD to a second internal HDD, without upgrading to the SE or Pro ($35. $55.) version.

  Summary

  Plenty of good free backup programs without wasting time, only to find out it's cripple-ware.
