GoAnywhere OpenPGP Studio makes it easy to protect sensitive files using the popular Open PGP (GPG) encryption standard. Documents can be encrypted, decrypted, signed and verified from your desktop using its intuitive graphical interface. An integrated key manager allows you to quickly create, import, export and manage Open PGP keys needed to encrypt and decrypt files. A wide variety of encryption algorithms are supported including AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) and TDES ciphers. GoAnywhere OpenPGP Studio runs on most operating systems including Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris and UNIX. Open PGP is a broadly adopted encryption technology for protecting confidential information such as financial and personal information including PII, PCI and PHI data. What sets Open PGP apart from conventional encryption is its asymmetric (dual-key) cryptographic system, which utilizes a combination of public and private keys. Messages sent to trading partners are encrypted with their unique 'public' key, but can only be decrypted with the secret 'private' key. Open PGP ensures that only authorized users (holding the private key) are able to access the protected data.

Uses Insecure Algorithms

Easy to use... that's not saying much, when the software has such fatal flaws in its' default behavior.
Cons
This software is not OpenPGP compliant, at least if you consider RFC4880 as your guideline. Among other things, PGP keys generated by this software appear to default to the MD2 hash algorithm, with MD5 as a fallback. MD2 was removed from GnuTLS in 2009 as insecure; MD5 is broken, and has long been deprecated -- in fact RFC4880 stipulates it as deprecated. This is bad enough, but the software even includes the DES and SAFER cipher algorithms. SAFER was rejected as an AES candidate; DES is the 1970s vintage 56-bit cipher. To give you an idea of just how insecure 56-bit DES is, in 1998, almost 20 years ago, the EFF built a DES-cracker for $250,000. This machine, known as DeepCrack, brute forced a DES-encrypted message in 56 hours. For any person (or organization) that is at all serious about security, these algorithms should have been abandoned over a decade ago. I am shocked (and astonished) that any current software supports these, even if only for compatibility.
Summary
NOT RECOMMENDED. This software is aimed at people who want easy to use software to secure their communications and/or files. The people this software is aimed at are not security experts, or PGP enthusiasts. They do not possess the background to determine whether the software is secure or not. As such, it is incumbent upon the software developers to choose sensible defaults for the software, and the keys generated by it. By defaulting to MD2, the software is doing the users a disservice.

Pros
OpenPGP Studio keeps a complex process simple. Very simple to download and install. Easy to create, import and manage security keys. Easy to select files to encrypt and decrypt. Lightweight and intuitive interface. For free...this is a great PGP encryption tool.
Cons
I have not run into any cons yet. If I need additional functionality like automation, I can get it from the vendor.
Summary
I've seen several free OpenPGP tools released, fizzle out and finally disappear. Most were tricky for the average user to learn, install and use. OpenPGP Studio simplifies the PGP encryption process and key management process far better than any other free PGP tool that I've seen. It's a great introduction to Linoma's other file security management tools. I've used Linoma's GoAnywhere MFT products and really appreciate their class A support team. It's great to see a very useful free product from a great company like Linoma Software. Kudos!
