This freebie CD ripping software might not be the speediest on the scene, but conversion to MP3 audio files gives it a boost.

The Free CD to MP3 Converter comes with a lot of useful features. It allows you to change CD audio into MP3, WAV, or OGG formats. This is really helpful because not all devices and media players support the same audio formats. You can choose to convert just specific tracks from a CD instead of having to convert the whole thing. This means if you only like a few songs on a CD, you can just convert those. The software also lets you record audio with your computer's built-in microphone, which is great for adding your own recordings to your music library.

The converter can handle various types of conversions. You can take audio tracks from a CD and turn them into MP3 or WAV files. It also lets you switch between WAV and MP3 files, which gives you flexibility depending on how you want to store and play your music. Besides, it supports OGG and WMA formats, giving you even more options for how you handle your audio files.

Another great feature is the ability to normalize audio files. This means the software can adjust the volume of your tracks so they all play at the same level. This avoids the problem of some songs playing too loudly and others too quietly.

If you opt for MP3, you may wait around longer than you'd like, as the program first extracts songs to temporary WAV files before converting them to the compressed codec. In our tests, the application had no trouble obtaining track information from the Internet. As you might expect, the program lets you set the bit rate and use VBR compression, but the ability to normalize tracks is a welcome surprise. Ditto for the audio-conversion and recording tools, which are quite basic but still work just fine.

Bottom Line

Note that when converting files to MP3 or WAV formats, you won't actually see them show up in a queue, though you can still process tunes in batch mode. The utility can also now compress WAV files into the OGG format. In the end, this piece of freeware makes a strong case for itself.
