If you are into 3D modeling and Art, this program allows you to make any virtual environment that you can think of. You'll just need some space somewhere on the internet to hold your models and graphics, then get your own world(or a 1 month trial) and build whatever you want and share it with anyone you want anywhere in the world where the internet can be accessed. You can use the world as a chat environment, or use it to show off your work, or even show off your art in a virtual gallery style. Worlds and places can be linked by teleports, and animation can be done by the use of simple script commands added to your models inworld. And, if you are skilled enough, you can even make your own games in these enviroments, from RPG's, board games, and even arcade style games with the use of Bot's that you can program in C++/Net and even Visual Basic. The only limitation is your own skill.
Cons
Lacks many features of more traditional chat clients. You can type and chat in person(avatar to avatar) or you can whisper privately while in the same area of a world. You may also send telegrams to others similar to an ICQ client, but without any advanced features at all.

now its even better since they have upgraded to 4.1 (if you have good connection speed and a good computer you will be glad you downloaded activeworlds,like anything else you will find good and bad peoples just stay away from those you dont like, and and better yet become a citizen of aw and the more possibilities are availlable, all in all it is exiting to be able to build and enjoying your builds ;)

Firstly I think this software is overrated in that unless you have fast computer speed you lag most of the time. There seemed no organisation at all within the program. I could not visit most "worlds" unless i paid money first, the games on offer consisted of bot controlled games which to me ran slow as hell and def not anything great. There seemed a dependancy on Bot controlled activities instead of program operated games. <p>I found the people very agressive and nasty when you tryed to get information about things going on. <p> <p>Overall a rather shoddy game software in comparrison to places like second life and vzones.

ActiveWorlds isn't a game. It comprises hundreds of individually owned worlds full of custom landscapes and buildings built from parts. There are now also gaming worlds and Bingo which is a fun group activity. Unlike other virtual spaces I've seen, aw has places where you can go and build, out in the country away from everyone. There are some places that are open to "tourists" unpaid users of the system. But, citizenship costs are reasonable and the benefits are being able to choose from each worlds' available avatars and building in your own citizen name that others cannot change, teleport lists kept in the aw browser and use of the aw telegram system.

I wish they had the custom avatar feature finished but, that's soon to be ready. I used to wish that more graphic formats were recognised but they've just fixed that too.

I downloaded this program as I have a great interest in VR. I found I had computer crashes constally and when I requested some help at their AWgate found messages of abuse forthcomming. It was not free, you have to pay $69.00 a year to fully enjoy. The features I considered to be old effects in comparison with other VR platforms today. <p> <p>I wanted to know more about what goes on within this VR platform and visited thier newgroups. Just like many there was flaming to anyone that critised the platform. I was unhappy also about the amount of "Adult" related VR "worlds" Not something I would expose a young child near.

i am a 3d modeler, i create 3d objects for a MMORPG i own, and some of the models i sell, although when i downloaded AW there infront of my are my avatars (people u move around etc etc) i am annoyied by this so i go to see the owner.. ohh look what the host is usingm they also stole my friends avatars (sonic and tails) they make money out of other peoples hard work and claim it as there own! and to top it all off they tried to sue me!!! DO NOT DOWNLOAD THIS PROGRAM IT'S NOT FREE NOR DOES THE OWNER DESERVE TO DO WELL!!! (btw i'm 13 so to answer ya question no i cannot sue them oh and one more thing after paying over 500dollars for a world... they deleted it TWICE!

What is not mentioned is that to use many of the features listed you have to pay $69.00 a year. In consideration that this format is based on renderware, a excelent games platform I thought is was sadley lacking in many features. In trying to discover the best features I visited the newgroups provided by activeworlds. There I found a rather digusting set of topics concerning activites in the main "Universe" This is one product I would not let any child near or use.
