The game is nonlinear.
No one gets rid of Eric. Just there was such an opportunity for those who do not like Eric. But I agree. I read fanfiction and very often I see good ruined texts. Simply because the author allowed readers' opinion to influence the plot. Here too the most in my opinion.
I have no issue with your opinion, I just think any blame is Ds's. The patreon were sold a package and that was part of the deal. More creators offer that access than don't (seems so anyway) market must support the model. If he communicated a vision, he to often is kind of wishywashy and he also gets to abdicate responsibility by using the patreon. I feel he has done that, I also question some of his poll results. Irony is you saying he is not true to his vision, when he apparently thought he should poll his 40s. Was that not part of his vision? The game is nonlinear.
